The Halifax Bank released their quarterly UK House Price Index. Brief index as follows
  • House prices increased by 2.0% in April and by 4.4% in the first four months of 2006.
  • The market is supported by solid fundamentals. They are: a strengthening economy, high levels of employment and low interest rates. These factors will continue to support the market over the remainder of 2006.
  • "The housing market in London is starting to pick-up momentum after flatter performance in 2004 and 2005 and is now seeing stronger growth than the UK average."
  • The average price of a house in Greater London is currently £258,511, almost 50% higher than the UK average of £172,979.
  • · House prices in Greater London rose by 0.5% in 2006 Quarter 1. The annual rate of house price inflation in Greater London is now 7.2%, higher than the UK average of 6.2%.
  • Over the past five years house prices in Greater London have increased by 64%.
  • Over the last ten years flats and maisonettes properties in the Greater London have seen the strongest growth, increasing by 248% from £72,522 in Q1 1996 to £252,239 in Q1 2006.
